Hallowveil
"She suspected he wouldn’t want her to remember their surroundings, but couldn’t resist glancing back to see where she’d been taken in the night. Behind her, towering against the black sky was a forest adorned with giant redwoods. She’d known they were there, a blind man would notice them. What surprised her was that Raven’s home itself was carved from the trunk of a tree. -- It was inconspicuous, perfect for a man who wished to live unseen."
~ Assassin's Realm
I conceived the idea of Raven's house in 2006, not because I thought of it, or felt inspired, but because it's what happened when I was writing. Later on, during edits and rewrites I debated the plausibility of living INSIDE an undead redwood and did a bit of research. Of course, we've all seen the drive through tunnels, but I hadn't seen this:
I only live a few hours away, but I'd never heard of it!
Anyways, I'm keeping it. I love the idea and it's fantasy so who cares if it's actually possible. (I'm convinced it is.)
Fun fact, the picture on this page was taken by me at Big Trees California. The photo does NOT do the enormity of these quiet giants justice. They are truly magnificent, they live, they breathe, they bleed red when cut and you can feel their presence with your eyes closed.
